Preface
With Judith Barry as the award winner, an internationally appointed jury selected an artist working across multiple disciplines. This decision aligns closely with the objectives of the Austrian Friedrich Kiesler Prize as defined by its statutes.
The prize is awarded for “outstanding performances within the area of architecture and the arts, corresponding to the innovative views of Friedrich Kiesler and to his theory of ‘correlated arts’ in that boundary-transcending sense which connects the established disciplines of architecture and the arts.”
Above all, the Board of Directors would like to thank the awarding authority of this year’s Kiesler Prize — the City of Vienna — as well as the members of the jury for their dedication and forward-looking decision.
We are particularly grateful to the founders and supporters who made the establishment of the Austrian Friedrich and Lillian Kiesler Private Foundation possible. Our deepest thanks go especially to Mrs. Lillian Kiesler, who continues to work tirelessly to promote Friedrich Kiesler’s life work.
The Foundation’s activities focus on the publication and dissemination of Kiesler’s work through the conception and organization of exhibitions and publications. These are grounded in ongoing research and the review of the extensive archive.
Looking ahead, special attention will be devoted not only to Kiesler’s artistic and theoretical contributions, but also to the history of his enduring influence.

Statement of the Jury
The nomination of Judith Barry was carried out by an international jury, which met on 10 July 2000. The jury was composed of Massimiliano Fuksas, Zaha Hadid, Vittorio M. Lampugnani, Peter Noever (chair of the jury), and Peter Weibel.
With their decision, the jurors aimed to honor a specific intention: to reflect the innovative and experimental spirit of Friedrich Kiesler and to open the Austrian Friedrich Kiesler Prize to multidisciplinary, boundary-transcending, and forward-thinking artistic experiments.
By awarding the prize to Judith Barry, the jury honors an artist whose work explores the complex interaction between architecture, media, and society. Her multimedia installations and theoretical writings address a wide range of subjects, from historical memory and mass communication to human perception.
Video and slide projections, computer graphics, monitoring techniques, and other forms of electronic communication form the basis of her approach, creating intersections between visual art, architecture, and urbanism. In this way, traditional architectural space is redefined and expanded.
Several conceptual threads link the theoretical and artistic work of Judith Barry with that of Friedrich Kiesler. This connection is particularly evident in relation to Kiesler’s visionary “correalist” theory — the view of architecture as a complex system intrinsically tied to human beings, and to the relationships between private and public spaces, as well as between individuals and their perception of the world.
